Hangry Planet Sells for $12 Million
Hangry Planet, billed as America’s first “plant-based mart,” has been sold for an astonishing $12 million, according to a CBS report.
The San Bruno, California-based business opened in 2022 and combined a traditional gas station and convenience store with an entirely plant-based food offering.
The sale price was reportedly far higher than founder Bobak Bakhtiari initially expected.
A Different Kind of Gas Station
Hangry Planet quickly stood out from conventional convenience stores by offering an all-vegan menu.
Customers could buy eggless breakfast sandwiches made with Beyond Meat products, veggie burgers and vegan hot chocolate, among other plant-based options.
The concept proved popular in San Bruno, a city located near San Francisco, helping Hangry Planet establish itself as an unusual destination for both drivers and vegan customers.
Why the Founder Went Vegan
Bakhtiari said his decision to launch the business was driven by what he learned about the dairy industry.
He described himself as a longtime fan of steak and dairy products before seeing the realities of dairy farming and reconsidering his food choices.
That experience ultimately inspired him to create a convenience-store concept centered entirely around plant-based products.
From Vegan Experiment to $12 Million Sale
What began as a niche food-and-retail experiment has now turned into a highly valuable property and business deal.
The $12 million sale highlights how unconventional retail concepts can attract significant value when they combine a distinctive brand, food offerings and a strategic location.
For Bakhtiari, the deal represents a remarkable financial outcome for a business that began with the goal of offering consumers a different kind of convenience-store experience.
A New Chapter for Hangry Planet
Hangry Planet’s sale comes as the food and convenience-store industries continue to evolve, with consumers increasingly exposed to plant-based alternatives.
The company’s story demonstrates that even a familiar American business model — the gas station — can be transformed through a highly specialized food and retail concept.
