Elon Musk is putting Tesla’s self-driving technology to a major test.
On Thursday, August 29, Tesla sent dozens of gold-colored Cybercabs onto the streets of Austin, Texas, giving passengers no steering wheel or brake pedal to take control of the vehicle in an emergency.
The rollout marks a significant step in Tesla’s push toward fully autonomous transportation as the company prepares to expand its robotaxi ambitions to additional cities.
Tesla’s ‘No Steering Wheel, No Pedals’ Cybercab
Tesla promoted the launch with the message, “No steering wheel, no pedals,” highlighting the company’s vision of a future where passengers simply get into a vehicle and let the technology handle the driving.
Musk also shared an image of a Cybercab floating above the Austin skyline before posting, “A Storm of Cybercabs.”
An invitation-only launch event was expected to take place later in the day.
Tesla Faces a Major Autonomous Driving Challenge
Tesla still trails Waymo in the number of autonomous taxis deployed and the number of passenger trips completed.
To close that gap, Tesla must demonstrate that its camera-based autonomous driving system can safely handle real-world situations, including pedestrians, traffic and unexpected road conditions.
Waymo and Amazon’s Zoox use a combination of cameras, radar and lidar, a laser-based sensing technology, while Tesla has continued to emphasize a camera-focused approach.
Americans Remain Skeptical of Driverless Cars
Technology may be advancing, but convincing passengers to trust a vehicle without traditional controls could be Tesla’s biggest challenge.
A Pew Research Center survey conducted in February found that around seven in 10 U.S. adults were either “not too” or “not at all” comfortable riding in a driverless car.
Only 16% said they would be “somewhat” comfortable, while just 7% described themselves as “extremely” or “very” comfortable.
That skepticism could become a major obstacle as Tesla attempts to persuade consumers that autonomous vehicles are safe enough to ride in without any human controls.
Tesla Is Under Pressure to Deliver
The Cybercab launch comes at a critical moment for Tesla.
The company recorded a second consecutive annual decline in vehicle sales last year, while profits also fell. Tesla additionally lost its position as the world’s top-selling electric vehicle maker to China’s BYD.
Tesla shares have faced pressure amid the sales slowdown, although the stock jumped more than 5% Thursday as investors reacted positively to the Cybercab rollout.
Tesla Already Has Robotaxis in Texas
Austin has hosted a Tesla robotaxi service since June 2025, but those vehicles still feature conventional steering wheels and brake pedals.
The service has since expanded to several other cities in Texas and Florida. Initially, Tesla vehicles operated with safety drivers who could take over if necessary.
Tesla now has more than 200 “unsupervised” robotaxis operating in those markets, according to RobotaxiTracker.
Waymo, however, remains far ahead, with more than 4,000 autonomous vehicles operating across 14 cities, according to the figures cited in the report.
The Bigger Test for Elon Musk
For Musk, the Cybercab is about more than introducing another futuristic Tesla vehicle. It is a test of whether consumers are willing to surrender control completely to autonomous technology.
The technology may eventually prove capable of handling the roads without human intervention, but Tesla still has to overcome a much harder challenge: convincing ordinary passengers to trust it.
The success or failure of the Cybercab rollout could play a major role in determining how quickly fully autonomous taxis become part of everyday transportation.
